Quicken checks are blank check sheets formatted to print from Quicken software. The print template inside Quicken expects the check to land in a specific zone on the page, and Quicken checks are pre-printed with the security features and MICR routing line in the right places to receive that print.
Compatible with every modern version of Quicken (Quicken Premier, Quicken Deluxe, Quicken Home & Business, Quicken Starter, and Quicken for Mac), plus older Quicken builds going back to early Intuit releases. They also work with QuickBooks, Sage 50, Xero, MYOB, Microsoft Money, and most other accounting programs that share the standard print layout.
Three formats cover most use cases. Voucher checks (check on top with two stubs below) for accounts payable and payroll. Three-on-a-page for high-volume payments without stubs. Wallet/personal Quicken checks for sole proprietors who want Quicken compatibility in a checkbook-size format.
Quicken's print setup is straightforward but a few defaults catch first-time users. After you write a check inside Quicken, the print dialogue asks for check style. Match this exactly to the format you ordered. Voucher format goes to 'standard' or 'voucher' depending on Quicken version. Three-on-a-page goes to 'wallet' or '3 per page.' Mismatching here is the most common reason checks print off-center.
Page setup needs to be Letter (8.5 x 11), portrait orientation, with print scaling set to 100% or 'actual size.' Don't use 'fit to page.' Quicken outputs the check at exact dimensions, and any scaling pushes the print off the security boxes.
Run the alignment wizard before your first real print. Quicken includes a built-in tool that prints a test grid and asks you to enter how far to shift the print zone in millimeters. This calibrates the printer driver to your specific machine. Save the alignment settings, and reprints will match for the life of that printer.
If you're running Quicken software, you need Quicken-compatible checks. If you're running QuickBooks, you need QuickBooks-compatible checks. Despite both being Intuit products, the print zones are slightly different and the formats aren't fully interchangeable.
That said, the chemistry, the paper, the security stack, and the bank acceptance are all identical. Same paper, same ink, same compliance. The only practical difference is whether the print template lines up with what the software outputs. Checkomatic's Quicken checks and QuickBooks checks come from the same production line, just with different print zones.
If you use both Quicken and QuickBooks (some businesses do, especially when one handles personal finance and the other handles business), you'll want one set of each. Don't try to print QuickBooks output on Quicken-formatted checks or vice versa. The MICR line will be in roughly the same place but the security boxes won't, and you'll lose the fraud protection benefits.
Intuit's check ordering portal routes through Checks Unlimited or one of two other authorized vendors, which adds a processing step. Total turnaround through Intuit averages 7-10 business days for standard shipping. Checkomatic prints in-house and ships direct, which keeps standard turnaround at 3-5 business days, and rush options ship next-day.
